Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about AI Metadata Cleaner.
What is AI metadata and why is it in my images?+
AI-generated images created by tools like Stable Diffusion, DALL-E, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, and others
automatically embed metadata that identifies the content as AI-generated. This can include EXIF tags with the
software name, XMP data with creator tool information, C2PA (Content Credentials) provenance data, and IPTC
Digital Source Type fields. These tags are used by social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to add
"AI Generated" labels to your posts.
Is this tool really free?+
Yes, AI Metadata Cleaner is completely free to use with no limitations. Since all processing happens in your
browser, our server costs are minimal (we only serve static files). The tool may display non-intrusive
advertisements to help cover hosting costs, but the core functionality will always remain free.
Are my files uploaded to your server?+
No, absolutely not. All file processing happens 100% locally in your web browser using JavaScript. Your files
never leave your device. You can verify this by opening your browser's Developer Tools (F12) and monitoring the
Network tab while using the tool — you will see zero file uploads. This is a fundamental design decision, not
just a feature.
What file formats are supported?+
Currently, we support the following formats: JPEG/JPG (full EXIF, XMP, and IPTC metadata support), PNG
(metadata stripping via canvas redraw), WebP (metadata stripping via canvas redraw), MP4 (video metadata
support coming soon), and MOV (video metadata support coming soon). JPEG files offer the most comprehensive
metadata editing capabilities.
What's the difference between 'Clean AI Tags' and 'Strip All Metadata'?+
"Clean AI Tags" performs a targeted removal — it only removes metadata fields that contain AI-related
markers (like "Stable Diffusion" in the Software field or AI-related XMP data). Other metadata like camera
settings, dates, GPS coordinates, and copyright info is preserved. "Strip All Metadata" completely removes
every piece of metadata from the file, leaving it completely clean. Choose "Clean AI Tags" if you want to
keep useful metadata, or "Strip All" for maximum privacy.
Does cleaning metadata affect image quality?+
For JPEG files: No. Metadata is stored in separate segments of the file, independent from the actual
image data. Modifying or removing metadata does not touch the image pixels at all — there is zero quality
loss. For PNG and WebP files: We use a canvas redraw technique which technically re-encodes the image.
The quality difference is negligible and typically imperceptible to the human eye.
What camera presets are available?+
We offer presets for popular devices including: Apple iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max; Samsung Galaxy
S24 Ultra, S25 Ultra; Google Pixel 9 Pro; Canon EOS R5, EOS R6 Mark II; Sony A7 IV, A7R V; Nikon Z8;
Fujifilm X-H2S; DJI Mini 4 Pro; GoPro HERO13 Black; Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses; and more. Each preset
injects the correct Make, Model, and Software metadata for that device. We also offer copyright/license
templates including Creative Commons variations and All Rights Reserved.
Can I add my own custom metadata?+
Yes! The Custom Metadata feature allows you to set: Artist/Author name, Copyright information, Camera
Make and Model, Software name, Image Description, Date and Time, and GPS Coordinates (Latitude and Longitude).
Simply expand the file card, open the Custom Metadata section, fill in the fields you want, and click Apply.
Will this prevent Instagram/Facebook from labeling my images as AI?+
Cleaning AI metadata removes the technical markers that platforms use to identify AI-generated content.
However, platforms may also use visual AI detection algorithms in addition to metadata checking. Removing
metadata addresses the metadata-based detection, but we cannot guarantee results against all detection methods.
Also note that platform policies and detection methods change frequently.
Is it legal to remove AI metadata?+
In most jurisdictions, modifying metadata on files you own or have rights to is legal. However, using
modified files to commit fraud, misrepresent authorship, or violate platform terms of service may have
legal consequences. We encourage ethical use of this tool. If you're a creator who uses AI as part of
your creative process, removing overly broad AI labels from your original work is generally considered
reasonable. Always check your local laws and the terms of service of platforms where you share content.
Can I process multiple files at once?+
Yes! You can drag and drop or select multiple files at once. Each file is processed independently and
gets its own set of options and download button. There is no limit on the number of files you can process
in a session.
Does this work on mobile devices?+
Yes, AI Metadata Cleaner works on any modern mobile browser including Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android.
The interface is fully responsive and touch-friendly. Processing performance depends on your device's
capabilities, but most modern smartphones handle it without any issues.
What browsers are supported?+
AI Metadata Cleaner works on all modern browsers including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari,
Microsoft Edge, and Opera. We recommend using the latest version of your browser for the best experience.
Internet Explorer is not supported.
