How AI Metadata Cleaner Works

A complete guide to understanding and using our metadata cleaning tool. Everything runs in your browser — fast, private, and free.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Upload Your File

Drag and drop your image or video into the upload zone, or click to browse from your device. We support JPEG, PNG, WebP, MP4, and MOV formats. You can upload multiple files at once.

Your file stays on your device — it's read directly by your browser using the File API. No data is sent to any server at this step or any other step.

2

Automatic Metadata Analysis

As soon as your file is loaded, our tool reads all embedded metadata including EXIF, XMP, IPTC, and ICC data. It then scans for AI-related markers.

We check for known AI generators (Stable Diffusion, DALL-E, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, etc.), C2PA content credentials, digital source type indicators, and AI-related software tags. Any detected AI markers are highlighted with a warning badge.

3

Choose Your Action

Expand the file card to see available options. You have four main choices:

Clean AI Tags

Removes only AI-related metadata while preserving camera settings, dates, GPS, and other useful data. Ideal when you want to remove AI labels but keep legitimate metadata.

Strip All Metadata

Removes every piece of metadata from the file. The result is a clean file with zero embedded information. Best for maximum privacy.

Apply Preset Template

Choose from popular camera models (iPhone 16 Pro, Canon EOS R5, Sony A7 IV, etc.) or copyright templates to inject realistic metadata.

Custom Metadata

Manually set artist name, copyright, camera make/model, software, date/time, GPS coordinates, and description fields.

4

Download Your File

Once processing is complete (usually under a second), a download button appears. Click it to save your processed file. The original file on your device remains unchanged.

For JPEG files, metadata is directly modified in the binary data. For PNG and WebP files, the image is redrawn on an HTML Canvas element which naturally strips all metadata.

Technical Details

What metadata fields are checked for AI?

We scan EXIF ImageDescription, Software, ProcessingSoftware, Artist, MakerNote, UserComment, XMP CreatorTool, HistorySoftwareAgent, DerivedFromDocumentID, DigitalSourceType, and C2PA content credential blocks. We check for keywords like "Stable Diffusion," "DALL-E," "Midjourney," "Adobe Firefly," "Meta AI," "generative," "synthetic," "GAN," "diffusion," "ComfyUI," "Automatic1111," and many more.

How does client-side processing work?

When you select a file, the browser's File API reads it into memory. The JavaScript libraries (exifr for reading, piexifjs for writing) operate on this in-memory data to parse and modify the binary metadata structures. The result is a new Blob object that you download. At no point does any file data leave the browser's sandbox.

Does this affect image quality?

For JPEG files: No. Metadata modification is performed on the binary metadata segments without touching the image data. There is zero quality loss. For PNG and WebP files: The canvas redraw method may result in very slight quality differences, but these are typically imperceptible.

Your Privacy is Guaranteed

We want to be absolutely clear: your files are processed entirely within your web browser. There is no upload endpoint, no cloud processing, and no temporary storage on our servers. You can verify this by monitoring your browser's Network tab in Developer Tools while using the tool — you will see zero file uploads.
